Chapter 16

The next morning the group decided to have breakfast in the hotel since both Edwin and Astari thought that Nomad should be seen by the public at least once. However, a small-scale argument flared up when it came to attire as Nomad really didn’t understand the etiquette of the social world.

“What’s wrong with being practical?”

“Practical shows off nothing.”

“Why would I need to show off? It’s just breakfast.”

Edwin sat there listening to the back and forth between Astari and Nomad.

“You were a god. Do you not understand anything about looking good?” she scolded.

“No, because when I was a god, I could look however I wanted.”

Throwing her hands up, “You are impossible!” and she stalked off from Nomad’s room into her own, slamming the door behind her.

“You really should listen to her,” Edwin finally pitched in.

Nomad sighed. “She reminds me of my brother.”

Edwin raised an eyebrow. “I don’t think you and J’aara would have ever–”

Nomad held up a hand to stop Edwin from talking. “No, my Soul Brother. I was the God of Power,” he explained, “the other half of that was Riastures, the God of Creation.”

He didn’t see Astari listening from the doorway as he spoke to Edwin. “He was the flamboyant type; Astari would get along well with him.” He smiled at the thought.

“As for me...I wielded the power of Cosmic Annihilation, yet I was beaten...smashed into this world I know nothing of.” He continued. “My power has corrupted the life here.” His tone became a little more maudlin as he continued, and a tear rolled down his face, “I wonder if I will ever see my home again?”

Atari’s head came to rest on his shoulder as she put her arms around him. “There are so many things I must put right here,” he whispered.

Edwin spoke up, “Well, first things first.” Handing the red waistcoat to Nomad, he smiled, “Get dressed.” They were quite the picture walking into the breakfast lounge. All eyes turned to the announcer.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the heroes of Vali,” he said smoothly as the three walked into the room. Whispers went up from every corner.

“I feel like a flower bouquet,” Nomad whispered to Astari, who just smiled as they made their way to the table led by the announcer. Only moments after sitting, someone approached the table. He was well dressed in a pair of brown leather, loose-fitting breeches with a red silk shirt, a cravat, and a black leather waistcoat.

“Good day.” He bowed politely. “May I enquire as to which one of you is Nomad?”

“I am Nomad.”

The man smiled politely, “You saved one of my relatives at Saladaria,” and bowed again. “For that, I can only express my deep thanks.” Nomad smiled politely.

“Can I see them?” the gentleman asked conspiratorially.

“See what?” Nomad asked, a little confused.

“The flames as white as the driven snow,” he asked quietly. Nomad held out his hand, shaping the flames into little birds just as he did for La’harens children. The room fell silent as they took to flight around the room.
